St. Piers School and College is part of Young Epilepsy. Young Epilepsy is the operating name of The National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy Charitable Trust - Registered Charity number 311877 (England and Wales).

This website is run by Young Epilepsy for St Piers School and College. This accessibility statement applies to stpiers.org.uk

Why website accessibility is important to Young Epilepsy and St Piers

St Piers School and College is an innovative and creative environment for children and young people with epilepsy, autism, severe learning difficulties, speech, language and communication needs, and sensory and/or physical needs. Our aim is to help them to fulfil realistic aspirations, achieve their goals, and develop meaningful and relevant skills for everyday life in society.

Website accessibility is important to us. We want to make sure that everyone can use this website to find the information they need about how we support young people with epilepsy, autism and sever learning difficulties.

Using accessibility guidelines

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are set by the World Wide Web Consortium. This site has been built with the WC3 accessibility guidelines in mind.


What we’ve done to make this website accessible

Our website is responsive. This means that it adjusts automatically to the device or size of the screen you are using, so it is as easy to use as possible.

Our website functionality is designed for accessibility. This means you can:

  • Zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen

  • Navigate the website using just a keyboard

  • Navigate the website using speech recognition software

  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We use plain language.

We use image descriptions for all the photographs on the site. This means that people using screen readers can access the images.

Colours. We’ve made sure that using easy to read colours and backgrounds is part of our design.

Fonts. We’ve chosen fonts and font spacings that will make the information on the site as easy to read as possible.

Videos. All of our new videos have subtitles and time-stamped transcripts.


Places where we can improve

We know we’re not perfect. Here’s where we plan to make changes in the future.

  • You cannot modify the line height or spacing of text
  • Most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
  • You cannot skip to the main content when using a screen reader
  • We are reviewing our virtual tour for accessibility issues and improvements.

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Interactive tools and transactions

Some of our interactive forms are difficult to navigate using a keyboard. For example, because some form controls are missing a ‘label’ tag.

Our forms are built and hosted through third party software and ‘skinned’ to look like our website.

We’ve assessed the cost of fixing the issues with navigation and accessing information, and with interactive tools and transactions. We believe that doing so now would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations. We will make another assessment when the supplier contract is up for renewal, likely to be in [rough timing].

PDFs and other documents

Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with information on how users can access our services, and forms published as Word documents. By December 2022, we plan to either fix these or replace them with accessible HTML pages.
