Our guiding principles

Children often come to St Piers feeling withdrawn or isolated. We do everything in our power to turn that around.

We nurture pupils to achieve as much as they’re capable of, regardless of any disability or condition they may be living with. Here, it’s not just about getting the grades. We want pupils to feel proud of what they’ve done and go on to lead happy, fulfilling lives.

When they achieve more than they were expecting, or do something kind towards another child or member of staff, we make a point of praising pupils. Simple things like putting their name on the Wall of Kindness, or making them Pupil of the Week, makes a huge difference to their confidence.

It leaves children feeling a sense of achievement – and shows them that they can go on to do bigger and better things. That’s a great platform for life.

Health and eco responsibility

We encourage everyone here to lead a healthy lifestyle, and place a real focus on personal, social and health education, healthy eating, physical activity, emotional health and well-being.

Our curriculum includes lessons that raise awareness on leading a healthy life. We teach pupils about healthy eating and encourage them to experience new sports, both here on campus and outside the school.

We have achieved a Silver Award in eco-school status.

Diversity

Celebrating differences is very important to us at St Piers, and we work hard to improve equality and diversity at our school.

To ensure we continue to do things right, we have an Equality and Diversity Committee made up of staff and students from both St Piers School and St Piers College.

Together, we look at ways of involving people. Creative arts plays a big part in this. Other collaborative activities include collective worship, classroom lessons, house activities and meetings.

We celebrate a variety of cultural, religious events and festivals too, reflecting the various ethnic groups in school. Our themed One World Week celebrates world cultures, customs and language.

Internationalism

Understanding the world around us is important to us at St Piers.

That's why we're delighted to have been awarded British Council International School status, in recognition of our commitment to integrating an international dimension into the curriculum.

Very good use of European Languages Week – well thought out and planned with a variety of cross-curricular activities. Good link with Russia and continue to use this international partnership to develop global dimension. Good Chinese project work. Well done!
The British Council

Our curriculum incorporates current affairs, the global environment, global history and geography. And we encourage children to get involved in discussions whenever possible.

We’ve also got some really successful partnerships with other schools in the UK and overseas. This allows our teachers to witness teaching practices and standards in other countries, and helps them reflect on how they work together with pupils here at St Piers to improve school life.
